Hi Love Lounge,

My condition is slowly getting worse and I’m getting clumsier with walking and carrying things. My boyfriend has started making jokes about it and it’s really starting to get me down. Any ideas on how I can let him know?

Hi Cath,

Thanks so much for writing in to us. First things first, your partner totally needs to know that he’s upsetting you, and quickly – before anything escalates. I’m sure he doesn’t mean to hurt your feelings and could just be being a bit mindlessly insensitive, or, perhaps making jokes about the situation is his way of trying to deal with what’s happening in a light-hearted way? Either way, you need to talk. I often find that mentioning things like this is best in a closed setting. Do you usually chat with a cuppa in bed in the mornings, or over dinner? Wherever you usually have your best conversations, just mention that you want to have a chat (that you don’t want to turn into an argument) and you want him to listen to everything you have to say before he replies. I’m sure he’ll be horrified that his actions have upset you, and will feel pretty bad about everything, so allow him some cooling off time too. We are usually very good at dealing with our own conditions, but sometimes forget that they can have an affect on our partners, too.

Wishing you all the best,

Emily x
